Opposite Narsarsuaq, about fifteen minutes away from the crossing, are the remains of the village where Erik the Red founded his colony in 982 under the name of Brattahlid. When he landed, the Viking chieftain declared it to be the best site in Greenland. The green fields explain why he then chose the name Greenland (green earth). The stone of Igaliku, a red and white sandstone, was used for the construction of the colony of which some interesting ruins can still be seen. Today's pretty little village is on the same spot and was founded in 1924 by Otto Frederiksen, a pioneer in sheep farming in Greenland
