Once we pass the Iron Gates, we enter the Boysun District. This mountainous region is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Central Asia. Its isolation has made it possible to preserve ancient traditions, a synthesis of shamanistic, Buddhist, Zoroastrian and Muslim practices. It is for this reason that the region was classified as a UNESCO intangible heritage site in 2001. The most enduring rituals are linked to the Navrouz festival, but also to major life events, such as circumcision for boys, weddings and funeral rites. Shamanism is widely practiced to heal all kinds of ailments and here you will find herbs and medicinal plants collected from the surrounding mountains. The region is also known for its large social gatherings, especially during ulaks, a men's only sporting event where horsemen fight over the carcass of a beheaded goat or sheep. The region's traditional dances and songs are also unique in Central Asia and revolve around major poetic and epic themes. To discover the region, it is necessary to take some time, the best being to base yourself in Boysun and to radiate afterwards in the surroundings.
