Situated on the north bank of the Ter, at the foot of the Montgrí massif, its old town houses part of a great wall built between the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as an interesting medieval heritage, as it was in the early Middle Ages that the town became a royal city. Its main arteries converge on the Plaça de la Vila, following an urban structure based on the model of ancient Roman settlements and considered the best example of this type of urbanisation in the Empordà. The other plus of this city is its intense cultural life, since many old houses have been converted into foundations or art galleries.
