Canaries got its name from the creole to designate "coal clay pots" that amerindians used a long time ago. It is a small fishing village located between Anse-La-Raye and Soufriere, also known as the forgotten village because it is far away from everything and the road which connects Canaries to Soufriere has only been built about 50 years ago. It is home to the tallest peak of the island called Mount Gimie (950 m tall) which can be seen in the centre of the island in the middle of the lush vegetation, beyond the mountain. While driving from Anse-La-Raye to Canaries, you experience remarkable hillside views with overwhelming sights of the Caribbean sea and unspoiled vegetation with deep ravines and jagged mountain ridges. On your way to Canaries, stop at anse Cochon, the best reknown spot for snorkeling where the resort "ti kaye" is established, then a few miles further, you will meet the famous bakery called "La Plas Kassav" where kassava bread is cooked on a platiner and flavoured with coconut (original), cinnamon, cocoa, ginger and even saltfish. It is a must-try as a local delicacy.
