Vigie comes from a French word meaning a lookout spot, indeed during the 18th century, Vigie peninsula was a strategic location to see the ennemy approaching. Nowadays, the military baracks located in Vigie witnesses those years of wars and now shelter different foreign embassies and the National Archives as well as the Saint Mary's college. The vigie lighthouse built in 1914 was used as far as 18th century and its light can be seen 30 miles out to sea. Vigie beach is a lovely strip of sand cleaned daily and stretching from the cemetery to after the GFL charles airport. You can easily park on the shady beach to enjoy the Caribbean sea or to exercise like many Saint Lucians do on that beach.
