Hopkins is considered by many to be the center of Garifuna culture in Belize. Here, you can spend long days lounging on the beautiful beaches with no time to spare, as if cut off from the rest of the world and lulled by the gentle Caribbean breeze and warmth. Around 1,000 people live here, mainly from fishing, farming and tourism. The latter is becoming increasingly important as expatriates settle here to open hotels and restaurants. Despite this development, the village of Hopkins remains very authentic and, compared with Placencia, has managed to retain the image of a small fishing village.
