At the southern end of the peninsula, the small town of Teknaf stands at the foot of the Naf River, a focus on the unfathomable mysteries of neighbouring Myanmar. Despite the environmental devastation inflicted on the surrounding hills (Teknaf lost 92% of its forest in barely 30 years), the succession of paddy, salt-salt swamps and pockets of jungle drew a beautiful mosaic. The Animal wildlife reserve, which occupies the north of the peninsula, is one of the last refuges for the Asian elephants in Bangladesh. As for the city, its border position makes it a hub for smuggling. The shops are full of products from the neighbouring country, in particular the Burmese bazaar, which attracts locals with low-priced items. If you plan to visit the island of Saint-Martin, a passage by Teknaf will be mandatory. This is where ferries leave for the island.
