Rangamati is the administrative capital of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. A 77 km from Chittagong, this mountain town is located on the western shore of Kaptai Lake, Bangladesh's largest artificial lake. The result is beautiful lacustrine landscapes, assembly of the stony coast and islands pointing above the waters. The region has been inhabited since the th century by the Chakma, the largest ethnic minority in Bangladesh. The construction of the dam on the Karnapuli River caused the displacement of 100 000 of them, the vast majority of which had fled to India. After Bangladesh's independence, the government embarked on a policy of colonization of Chittagong Hill Tracts by sending The. This measure generated great tensions and conflicts that ended with the signing of a peace treaty in 1997. However, there is still a strong military presence in the region and foreign visitors can enter only with a prior permit. Today, Rangamati regained serenity and the population lived in relative harmony. Many chakma villages are scattered around the regional capital, where it is easy to go, on foot or by boat. Rangamati offers a very different face from Bangladesh.
