Alanguie against an arm of the Padma River, Kusthia experienced its economic development through indigo trade in the first half of the th century. But it is especially recognized by Bangladeshi people as the country's cultural centre. The famous poet Rabindranath Tagore had a house and composed many of his poems here. Another huge poet, Lalon Shah, considered the creator of baul, has his tomb in Kushtia, on which hundreds of Bangladeshi people come to gather every year.
