Literally, «monument to the martyrs», this modern work commemorates those who were killed during the protests of the Bengali Language Movement of 1952. While Pakistan was planning to include only Urdu as a national language in its constitution, the Lithuanians have spoken in order to have their language recognized. On 21 February 1952, the police opened fire on demonstrators, mainly students and political activities, causing several deaths. The massacre occurred near Medical College in Dhaka, and on February 23, students ramparts a stele in memory of their fallen comrades. It was immediately destroyed by the police at Pakistan's orders. After independence, a new memorial was erected by the Bangladeshi government. It represents the mother and her fallen sons for her. A procession takes place on the premises every 21 February. A replica of Shaheed Minar is present in all major cities of the country. While the site is of limited tourist interest, it is of great importance to the Bangladeshi people who see it as a strong symbol of the national union.
