Pleasant seaside resort on the northeast coast of the island, well-equipped but somewhat off-centre. Its large sandy beach extends as far as Capo Castello, where the ruins of a Roman villa dating back to the 1st century AD can be seen. Another villa, but this one dating back to the end of the 19th century, is the imposing Tonietti, with its eclectic style, also known as "Il Castello", built by the powerful homonymous family that ran the local mines.Cavo, the closest point of connection to the Italian mainland, is one of the three ports of arrival on the island of Elba. The Piombino-Cavo crossing is operated by two ferry companies, Moby and Toremar.
