Named Mitrovicë/Mitrovica in Albanian and Косовска Митровица/Kosovska Mitrovica in Serbian, the city is actually called Mitrovica (pronounced "mitrovitsa") by all inhabitants: the epithet Kosovska serves to differentiate it from other localities of the same name in Serbia. The municipality has about 100,000 inhabitants, 70% of which are Albanians and 22% Serbs. It is located 36 km southeast of Serbia, 41 km northwest of Pristina.A major mining city founded by Serbian kings in the 14th century, Mitrovica remains the economic lung of Kosovo with the industrial group Trepča, which exploits here deposits of lead, zinc and the largest reserves of lignite in the Balkans. Unfortunately, it is also the most divided city in the Balkans. Bruised by the war, Mitrovica is since 1999 cut in two with the river Ibar as "border". On one side, South Mitrovica with 71,000 inhabitants, 96% of whom are Albanians. On the other, North Mitrovica with 29,000 inhabitants, 76% of whom are Serbs, 16% Bosnians and 5% Roma. Each has its own town hall, museum, university, soccer club (KF Trepça in the south, FK Trepča in the north) and the Serbian dinar is the currency of reference in the north. A zone of permanent tension, Mitrovica was described as the "city of anxiety" by the French KFOR soldiers who were in charge of the area until the end of their mandate in 2014. If today it offers a more peaceful face, it still has few tourist assets to show, except the beautiful landscapes of the Kopaonik mountains in the north
