VERZAT

Verzat is a festival specific to the region of Opoja (villages between Prizren and Dragash). It aims at preparing the fields for the next harvest. The date coincides roughly with the date of the spring equinox. Some start earlier than others. The festival lasts 2 days and the festivities take place during the day and at night. It is not uncommon that on this occasion, ritual fires are lit to implore the fertility of Mother Earth. The ashes are then spread in the fields so that the harvest is abundant and preserved from the evil eye.
