The village is called Драгаш/Dragaš in Serbian (pronounced "dragach") and Dragashi/Dragash or Sharri/Sharr in Albanian. It has a population of 1,100, of which 51% are Gorans and 45% are Albanians. It is located 34 km southwest of Prizren, 20 km north of Šištavec/Shishtavec (Albania).Perched at an altitude of 1050 meters, this green village with its socialist period buildings owes its name to the Serbian lord Konstantin Dragaš who was a powerful Ottoman overlord here in the 14th century. Dragaš/Dragash is the gateway to the southern part of the Šar Mountains National Park and, above all, to Gora ("mountain" in Slavic), the southern tip of Kosovo with a population of about 15,000. This isolated region is squeezed between Mount Korab on the Albanian side and the Šar Mountains on the North Macedonian side. It is home to one of the smallest minorities in the Balkans: the Gorans, Islamized Slavs known for their colorful weddings, oiled wrestlers, good cheese, and a breed of dogs that herd huge flocks of sheep. The Gorans have long enjoyed a degree of autonomy. But in 1999, Albanian nationalists rushed to merge the Gora into the new "Sharr municipality" by adding the Opoja/Opoje valley (to the north), which is 99% Albanian. The Gorans are now in the minority (35%) in this entity and their culture is threatened with extinction. Dragaš/Dragash is served by two buses/day from Prizren, but it is better to come by car to explore the villages of the Gora.
