Here, Spanish is as common as English, since the population is descended both from the ancient Mayans who inhabited the region when the Spaniards arrived, and from a fringe of mestizo population from the neighboring country: Mexican refugees have been settling here since the time of the Caste War in the 19th century, which did not spare this region either. Not very popular with travellers, it comes alive mainly during Mexican-style religious festivals and Carnival. There's not necessarily much to do here, but the little town has a special aura about it, and is a great starting point for touring the region.
