Travel Guide Berhale

This is the first stop on the road to the Danakil desert when you come from Mekele, and you used to come and stay with local people, but for the moment this road is closed. The desert is reached via the Afar country to the east. Expeditions set off from Semera, east of Kombolcha, to cross into Afar country. At the foot of the mountains that climb to the Mekele plateau, Berhale is located in a more arid environment. The desert is not far away! It's a charming village, a little frozen in time, with dusty alleyways laid out in a grid pattern. It is populated by Catholic Tigrayans and sedentary Muslim Afar.
