Also called Rio Castello, this peaceful village, perched at 178 meters, lives in the shadow of two peaks, Mount Strega and Cima del Monte. Its historical centre, where time seems to have stopped, has preserved a medieval aspect with narrow streets, old walls, small squares and flowered balconies. Equidistant from the sea to the east and west, Rio nell'Elba dominates the mining area that for centuries made the fortune of the Elba. Already in Prehistory, this territory was an important mining centre. Unesco has classified Elba Island among the richest geological sites on the planet, including the mining areas of Rio nell'Elba and those of Mount Calamita.
