5,585 inhabitants. From the 19th century onwards, the county of Bages established itself as the leading wine producing region in Catalonia. In 1908, the small village of Artés saw the birth of the very first agricultural cooperative in the region - the Sindicat Agrícola d'Artés - created under the leadership of Martí Sanglas. Every year, at the time of the harvest, the village hosts the Festa de la Verema del Bages, which celebrates the wine culture in the county, an unmissable event for wine lovers. On the eastern borders of the Pla de Bages, the landscapes of vineyards and cultivated fields that surround the village will also be the occasion for some beautiful walks. To the east of the village, in the Serra de les Guixeres, there are still some old artisanal gypsum mines that were used until the last century. The presence of these rocks in the Geopark's territory testifies to the first phase of drying out the sea that occupied central Catalonia. The escarpments of the Malrubí River, which crosses the city and also Santa Maria d'Oló, represent the transition between the sea and the sedimentary environment that followed it, from the blue-grey colours of the marls to the white and grey of the plasters, passing through the red of the clays and sandstones.
