Maafushi is very easily accessible from Male. The island is 1.27 km long and 260 metres wide and is one of the largest in the archipelago. If we consider the local population, it is home to 2,700 people. But it breaks records in terms of accommodation, which multiplies its population in high season. There are nearly seventy guest rooms! The economy has flourished since the government allowed guest houses to open on the local islands. And Maafushi is making steady progress in this area. There is a wide range of accommodation, restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, diving centres, a water sports centre, a (fairly small) beach reserved for tourists where bikinis are allowed. The reef of the island is in bad condition and all the corals have bleached. So you have to take a boat to enjoy the underwater wonders. The positive side is that you can do almost anything on this island, while being in contact with the local population. The disadvantage, given the small size of the island and the number of accommodations, is that you find yourself surrounded by travellers from all over the world rather than Maldivians! In spite of the already extensive offer, the islanders and developers continue to build small buildings to accommodate visitors. Maafushi is primarily aimed at groups of friends or families. For a couple looking for more privacy, it is better to go to less crowded islands. Alcohol consumption is forbidden on the local islands, so the locals have found a solution. A boat transformed into a floating bar anchors off the island. Just ask your hotel where to take the small motor boat to get there. The island is also home to a penitentiary centre which occupies the entire southern part. Ironically, this is where former President Nasheed was imprisoned in 2015, on the very island he developed by allowing guest houses.
