Thulusdhoo is one of the local islands in the North Malé Atoll, 28 kilometres north of Malé. It has a population of 1,400, but more are expected soon. The island has been enlarged on its western and southern parts and its surface almost doubled. Thulusdhoo, despite its small size of 40 hectares, has a diversified industry. Bonito and sea cucumber are dried, there is a shipyard and above all a Coca-Cola factory. This factory for the production of the famous soda is the only one in the world to produce the drink from desalinated water. It has earned the island its nickname of Coca-Cola Island. The island is also an excellent place to learn about the local culture. Here, people still play games that are unknown elsewhere. The women play bashi, a game played with a ball and a racket and two participants. The first one hits the ball as hard as she can while the second, at the other end of the field, has to catch it. The men play baibalaa, a contact sport that involves hitting an opponent inside a circle and coming out of the circle without being hit back. With its powerful surfing spots, the island attracts primarily those who love surfing and rollers. There are about 20 guesthouses on the island, which primarily cater to surfers. But unlike Himmafushi Island further south, there are many other activities for those who do not surf. A reef rich in fish and coral can be found near the jetty on the north side of the island and it is not uncommon to see playful dolphins passing by. By taking a dhoni, you can also reach many spots for snorkeling, diving, deep-sea dolphin watching or night fishing.
