The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park was created in 1983 to preserve underwater flora and fauna. It covers more than 280 km2 and is made up of a group of around twenty islands, the majority of which lie to the west of South Andaman and around 16 kilometers from Port Blair. Most of the islands are accessible day and night, and a number of private tour operators organize excursions. The islands are uninhabited and covered with thick rainforest, mangroves and fine sandy beaches. The seabed is lined with a great diversity of coral and is home to dugongs, colorful fish and sea turtles, which come to lay their eggs on the islands. Diving and snorkeling are also available. The main islands are : Alexandra, Bell, Boat, Chester, Grub, Hobday, Jolly Buoy, Malay, Pluto, Red Skin, Riflemen, Rutland, Snob, Tarmugli and Twins.
