From Perth to Adelaide, the distance is the same as from Paris to Moscow, i.e. 2,700 km. Getting to Western Australia from Ceduna means crossing the Nullarbor Plain, a vast, flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid region immediately north of the Great Australian Bight. The word "Nullarbor" is formed from the Latin words nullus, "null", and arbor, "tree". From Ceduna to Esperance, the Nullarbor Plain stretches for 1,400 kilometers and covers an area of around 200,000 km². A large part of the region is part of the Nullarbor National Park. The climate is typically desert-like, with temperatures reaching almost 50°C during the day and freezing at night. The region is criss-crossed by the Eyre Highway and the Indian Pacific line, the Trans-Australian Railway, which links Sydney to Perth, via Adelaide, with the world's longest straight railway line, stretching for a thousand kilometers.Located 785 km west of Adelaide, Ceduna is at the junction of the Eyre Highway from Port Augusta and the Flinders Highway from Port Lincoln. It boasts a fine hotel, the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel, and a seafood bistro. This is the last major town, with a population of 2,600, before Penong, Nundroo (151 km away), then Nullarbor Roadhouse (296 km) and the vast desert expanses of Nullarbor National Park.
