The history of the city is linked to the figure of General Baldomero Espartero, winner of the Battle of Ramales in 1839, who opposed the Liberals against carlists. This victory, among other successes during the first carlist war, earned him the nickname «peacemaker of Spain» and the title of Duke of Victory - turning Ramales into «Ramales de la Victoria». In the same battle, it was said that Espartero discovered a safe filled with Manila shacks that had been abandoned by the carlist troops during their precipitous flight of the city, which he gave to the women of the city. Since that episode, the Verbena del Mantón (feast of the shades) has been celebrated every year, in which the participating couples, dressed in traditional costumes, dance the Scottish to the sound of the organ.
