The tourist jewel of the Andaman Islands, Havelock's devastating beauty won't leave you in a hurry. Long beaches of powdery white sand finer than talcum powder, turquoise waters and coconut-fringed shores make it a paradise in which to immerse yourself for a few days. Only the northern half of the 113 km² island is inhabited and developed. The south of the island is left untouched, covered by thick rainforest. Havelock boomed with the arrival of Bengalis from Bangladesh in the early 1970s. Indira Gandhi's government gave them land to grow rice, coconuts, mangoes, guavas... Everything grows on Havelock, except potatoes and onions, which have to be imported from the mainland. Crops are now concentrated in the center of the island. The east coast is home to resorts and guest houses. Here, the villages are numbered, and there are 7 of them. The best hotels are located in Village n° 5, right on the water, on one of the island's most beautiful beaches. Havelock is a paradise for water-based activities: diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, underwater walks and swimming beaches.
