Stretching 11 km long and 3 km wide, Boulay Island is the main of a string of thirteen islands located in the Ebrié Lagoon, near the autonomous port and the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed to have been named after a companion of Lieutenant Cormet, who explored the lagoon at the end of the 19th century, or, depending on the version, after the name of a former settler who had a plantation there. Attached to the municipality of Yopougon, the archipelago is sparsely populated, with most of the islands lacking telephone lines and even running water for some. They are home to fishing villages (Ossibissa, Baoulékro, N'Zimakro, Johnnykro...) that have preserved their architectural and social authenticity. Boulay Island is a very popular holiday resort for Abidjanese because of its relative isolation and its proximity to the city. Boulay Island is characterized by a still preserved nature, natural sites of great beauty (Lake Bakré, mangrove forest, coconut groves, snake island...)....) and its famous "Bay of Billionaires", likened to a local Beverly Hills where, in a luxuriant vegetation of multicoloured hibiscus and tropical trees, sumptuous residences compete in charm and elegance. Indeed, even more than in Assinie, the end of the end when you are an Abidjanese in, is to have your "cabanon" on Boulay Island. Business leaders, ministers, rich expatriates, diplomats and some showbiz personalities have established their second home there. A place of contrast where these wealthy city dwellers cohabit in harmony with the native villagers.A bridge project linking Yopougon to Boulay Island, should within a few years give a completely different face to this peaceful Eden, already in the sights of foreign investors who want to build a 5-star hotel complex for some, and an agro-industrial site for others. So far, the little piece of paradise is resisting, but we can think that it won't last. All the more reason to take advantage of the bewitching charms of Boulay Island while it is still a little cut off from the world...
