Kantale is located 46 kilometers northeast of Habarana and 38 kilometers from Trincomalee. Its main point of interest is the Kantale Tank, built by King Aggabodhi II (7th century) and rehabilitated by King Pramakabahu. Sometimes called Gangathala Vapi, it is one of the oldest tanks on the island. It covers an area of 3,750 hectares and was built for crop irrigation. It provides water to a large area, for rice fields, sugarcane plantations, but also for human consumption in Trincomalee and surrounding areas. Its source is the Mahaweli River, the longest river on the island.
