The project to create an Amazonian park in French Guiana dates back to the Rio Earth Summit in 1992: a protocol of agreements between the various regional assemblies of metropolitan France and Guiana was launched and then signed at the initiative of French President François Mitterrand. It took 15 years for the 3.7 million hectares of forest covering the territory of the communes of Camopi, Papaïchton, Saül, Saint-Élie and Maripasoula to be recognised as a protected park in 2007: the largest in Europe, but also the largest protected area of tropical forest in the world! Ecotourism is also encouraged by the public authorities.
