The Väderöarna Islands are the most advanced lands on Bohuslän, the coastline along the North Sea. After them, the horizon is endless! The history of these islands goes back to the 1600s when they were inhabited by "pilots": experienced navigators with great sailing skills who scanned the ocean to help ships in danger. Living on the islands with their families, the pilots could be called upon at any time if there was a sign of distress. They had to navigate to the boat in difficulty in order to take over the helm and rescue it. Indeed, these pilots knew the slightest shoal of the archipelago and could thus lead the sailing ship to a safe harbor. They were not paid by the government, but in exchange for their know-how, they were the only ones authorized to fish around the archipelago. Today, sea rescues are no longer done from the island, but the operations are still directed by a private organization and not public! Walking around the island of Storö-Ramnö, one of the 300 islands belonging to the Väderöarna reserve (and which can be reached by the Plogjärnet, the Väderöarna Värdhus boat), one can discover relics of the past such as a compass rose engraved in stone. The date of its creation could be identified thanks to the North point which presents degrees of difference with our North of today. In fact, magnetic fields move over the centuries and so does the North of our compasses. Finally, you can see a radar antenna that was erected when Sweden joined the Shengen area. To protect the coastline, Sweden has placed 96 such pillars around its maritime borders. A local fisherman tells that the radar of Storö-Ramnö was out of order for a long time,... but that it was quickly repaired the day Ukraine lost Crimea...Count half a day to a day for the visit.
