Ithaca is the cultural heart of the Finger Lakes region, and for good reason: it is home to one of the country's most prestigious universities, Cornell University, which is part of the highly selective Ivy League. It is attended by more than 20,000 students, who represent nearly two-thirds of the population. In fact, in Ithaca, the average age of the inhabitants is 21 years! Nature is Ithaca's other asset, and one of the reasons why it is such a popular destination. There are nearly 100 waterfalls throughout the city and its surroundings, and three state parks within ten miles of each other. Not to mention, of course, Lake Cayuga, the longest lake in the Finger Lakes, whose peaceful waters punctuate the lives of its inhabitants all year round.
