Located on the banks of the Chenab River, Multan is one of the oldest cities in the subcontinent. Ideally located between South Asia and Central Asia, Multan has always attracted convoitise. The city was allegedly conquered by Alexander the Great in 326 B.C.A few centuries later, it was the Arab Commander Muhammad bin Qasim who attacked him in 713. Alors then became the outpost of Islam of the Indian subcontinent. In order to protect it from all these incursions, the old town of Multan was fortified, but today only three of the six gates protecting it are still standing. The "city of saints", as it is known, is known for its many temples and Sufi tombs. It is an important pilgrimage place for the faithful of this branch of Islam.
