Alors then became the outpost of Islam of the Indian subcontinent. In order to protect it from all these incursions, the old town of Multan was fortified, but today only three of the six gates protecting it are still standing. The "city of saints", as it is known, is known for its many temples and Sufi tombs. It is an important pilgrimage place for the faithful of this branch of Islam.
