This Tz'utujil and K'iche' municipality adjacent to San Pedro La Laguna is characterized by its streets of buildings adorned with beautiful frescoes. This is a good example of the work of local painters, whose superb, colorful canvases can be found in the small art galleries mainly concentrated in the - rather steep - avenue starting from the pier. Inaugurated as "Calle de las Artes " in 2021, this 5-cuadra stretch is decorated with illuminations, masks used in traditional Guatemalan dances, and clay jars. It's reminiscent of the "Calle de los Sombreros", where people walk around in brightly coloured hats. San Juan La Laguna is also renowned for its ceramics stores and, above all, its cotton and wool textiles, some of which are dyed from tree seeds and bark. Finally, there are stores selling natural products used for medicinal purposes.
