Founded in 1886 by William Monroe, Monrovia became the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County in 1887 after Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Pasadena. Its crossing gives the choice between two routes of Route 66 from the intersection with Shamrock Avenue. The first is via Foothill Boulevard (1920-30 alignment), which runs along Interstate 210 from quite a distance north of the city, and the second is via Huntington Drive (1930-40 alignment), which follows the same interstate but from much closer. Whichever option is chosen, the two alignments meet 6.5 miles away on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, south of Interstate 210
