The name Duarte comes from a Mexican soldier, Andres Duarte, who was given this land (previously occupied by the Gabrielino Indians) by the governor of the time in 1841, to create a ranch for himself and his wife. However, it was not until 1957 that the town was incorporated and recognized as such. Duarte, which has become primarily residential, is located approximately halfway between San Bernardino and Santa Monica. For old race car enthusiasts, a visit to the Justice Brothers Racing Museum (2734 East Huntington Drive) is a must. Every year, at the end of September, the city organizes the Route 66 Parade.
