On the outskirts of the small village of Fukuchani on the road to Nungwi, halfway between the northern tip of the island and the port of Mkokotoni, are the ruins of two Shirazian villages built of coral in the 15th century, Fukuchani and Mvuleni. Or more precisely, domestic houses. Don't expect to find buildings in good condition, in Zanzibar unfortunately the historical remains degrade quickly. You can use this visit as an excuse to linger in the authentic village and observe the local Zanzibarite life, punctuated by the calls to prayer, school leaving, agricultural work and the arrival of the fishing.
