Its Jon, which was founded in 1904, was bypassed by Interstate I-40 in 1981. Its name may come from the San Jon Creek, which flows east of town and through which Route 66 also passes. Between the border and San Jon, Bard (on Frontage Road north or on Quay Road 58.5 - Route 66 of 1940-50) and Endee (on the second possible dirt route from Glenrio - Route 66 of 1920-30) are ghost towns, if not extinct. In San Jon, where the two routes meet, only the San Jon Motel (715 East Main Avenue) remains. You must now follow the Frontage Road south to reach Tucumcari.
