A simple farming community in 1913, Fontana became a thriving industrial town in 1942 with the opening of the Henry J. Kaiser steel mill. Today, Fontanta is the second largest city in the county. The Kaiser Fontana Medical Center employs more than 6,000 people. As it passes through Fontana, Route 66 is lined alternately with shopping centers and orchard areas, without the scenery ever really being pretty. Bono's Historic Orange, a small orange-shaped juice stand built in 1936 that stood on Route 66, was removed in 2019. It is expected to be relocated downtown after being renovated.
