Quapaw, the first community crossed by Route 66 (Highway 69 Alt.) in Oklahoma from Baxter Springs, is home to less than 1,000 people. It is the tribal seat of the Quapaw Indians, who originally resided in Arkansas. Several establishments outside of town (Quapaw Casino and Downstream Casino Resort, among others) contribute to the tribe's economy. During the Fourth of July celebration, the Quapaw Tribe hosts one of the oldest powwows in the state. The four-day intertribal event is held on tribal land just southeast of Quapaw. The 150th anniversary of the event was held in 2022.
