Republic was founded in 1871 by settlers who had gradually moved into the area along the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. Ten years earlier, the area around Republic had seen the first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi. It took place at Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. By the end of the conflict in 1865, Missouri had seen so many battles and skirmishes that it ranks as the third most fought state in the nation. Republic is now home to 19,000 people and requires a slight detour to Route 66 to get there.
