The village of Broadwell was founded in 1856 by William Broadwell and Jacob Eisiminger while the railroad was being built between Chicago and Springfield. The bypassing of the town by I-55 in 1978 put an abrupt stop to its economic activity, even though a highway access was created. Since the destruction by fire of the Pig Hip Restaurant in 2007, Broadwell has not had much to offer the traveler. This restaurant, very famous in its time, served pork sandwiches for almost 50 years. A sign in its honor (Pig Hip Restaurant Memorial) can be seen on the side of Route 66, at 100-198 N Frontage Rd.
