Shirley is the first community crossed by Route 66 southwest of Bloomington. The town was founded in 1866 by John Foster, who established a store next to the current train station. Today Shirley has a population of only 400. South of the town and Intersate 55, Shirley is home to the Funk Prairie Home and Gem and Mineral Museum, which tells the story of the Funk family, who created the neighboring town of Funks Grove, where you can taste the famous maple syrup that is harvested in the early spring and learn its secrets.
