The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery (20953 West Hoff Road) is dedicated to the veterans of the various wars. When completed, it will house over 400,000 graves. Established in 1999, since 2015 it has been the first U.S. national cemetery to house a memorial to veterans of the LGBT community. The city of Elwood itself, with its eight thousand five hundred inhabitants, has little interest from a tourist perspective. It is a residential town where middle-class families live. Elwood was, in the 1880s, a sundown town: a town forbidden to African-Americans.
