Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, the heart of Subiaco was very heavily damaged by the bombings of the Second World War. Fortunately, its two monasteries (San Benedetto and Santa Scolastica) were spared and can still be visited today. They bear witness to the history of Western monasticism, since it was here that St. Benedict enacted his rules of monastic life. In Subiaco you can also find the ruins of the villa of Nero who tried to dominate nature by controlling the river Aniene to create three artificial lakes and waterfalls! It is from this history that the city takes its name: Subiaco comes from Sub lacum (under the lake).
