The walls of the medieval city of Viterbo date back to the 12th century, but it was in the 13th century that the city really came into its own when it became the seat of the papacy. Viterbo still displays its medieval decor, especially in the San Pellegrino district. The Fontana Grande, the most impressive of the city's Gothic fountains, is worth seeing. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Palace of the Popes, which is a piece of history in its own right, are also not to be missed. In addition to its rich history, Viterbo is also very appreciated for its thermal waters; there is the Terme dei papi, a thermal bath renowned throughout Lazio.
