The city was built from a fantasy, the ambition of former president Sukarno. In 1957, Indonesia's first president imagined a new capital for his country, similar to today's Brasilia. In the middle of the forest, on the Kahayan River and on the foundations of a small village, work began. Grand boulevards, huge traffic circles and ambitious buildings were erected... The surface area of the new capital was calculated as large as possible, and to this day it remains the largest of all Indonesian cities. But the attempt at decentralization failed. Palangkaraya is nevertheless the capital of Central Kalimantan and has kota status. The city's population is estimated at around 280,000. Palangkaraya is the ideal starting point for discovering Dayak villages and orangutans in the heart of the jungle, aboard a rangkan, a traditional river boat fitted out for ecotourism.
