According to the native calculations, Cuscatlán was founded in 1054 by the last King Topiltzín Atzil. At that time, the city had nearly 12 000 inhabitants living in xacales, ranches made from wood and straw, all around the crater of the volcano Cuscatlán volcano. In the native language, Cuscatlán means "the jewel". In June 1524, Pedro de Alvarado at the head of the Spanish conquistadors seizes Cuscatlán.
