It can be reached by ferry from the town of Farewell. In 2004, Zita Cobb, a local woman, returned to her island and decided to found a charity to revitalize the area. Her project: to turn Fogo Island into a kind of "Villa Medici Borealis" by attracting artists from all over the world who would come to seek inspiration in these remote landscapes. She called upon another Newfoundlander, architect Todd Saunders, to create ultra-designed studios to accommodate these artists. Saunders was also commissioned to design a luxury hotel, the Fogo Island Inn, which was inspired by traditional Fogo buildings.
