Welcome to "l'île Noire"! Nicknamed for its volcanic ashes and the magic that is practiced there, Ambrym is also known for its monumental drums, sand drawings and the famous Roma dance, which takes place once a year. The island is also a trekkers' paradise. The two twin volcanoes, Mount Benbow and Mount Marum, are accessible to walkers in at least 45 minutes (or several hours at a normal pace). The caldera, 12 km in circumference, has a lunar aspect. Ambrym, so named by Captain Cook in 1774, means "there are yams" in Ranon's language. In May 2018, the Ambrym volcano continued its activity and reached the alert level of 2/5. Be sure to check out the activity of these volcanoes and the danger zones before planning your trip.
