Travel Guide Ambaé

Described as the most beautiful island in the world by the American author James Albert Michener (1907-1997), who stayed there as an American officer during the Second World War, Ambae is still on the margins of the modern world. Ambae is the island on which the Manaro Voui volcano is located, one of the most active in the world. In April 2018, following forecasts by the country's Geological Hazard Prevention Observatory (the volcano is placed at alert level 3/5), Vanuatu declared a state of emergency on Ambae and strongly recommended that its inhabitants evacuate the island permanently and settle on the neighbouring island of Maewo. In May 2018, the authorities announced the "total and definitive evacuation of the island". All travel to this island is therefore suspended until further notice.
