Pentecost is famous in Vanuatu and even the Pacific for its Naghol (Gaul jump). Legend has it that the first person to jump was a woman! Pursued by her husband Tamalie, she pretended to throw herself into the void to escape, tying both feet with a vine to ensure her survival. Tamalie jumped after her but without a vine, and died when she reached the ground. Since then, every year during the yam period, men have built a gigantic tower of vines and woods that can reach nearly 40 metres. The participants then jump into the void, held back by a simple vine to bless the ground and ensure a good harvest but also to prove their passage from child to man. This show takes place every Saturday from April to June in several villages. Unfortunately, in recent years, these jumps have become more and more frequent (sometimes up to three times a week) and therefore lose some of their meaning because culturally, young men only jump once. Today, some young people may jump several times a day and several times a week over several months. It is therefore advisable to go to Pentecost on Saturdays only and from April to June. The island stretches from south to north for more than 60 km, it is populated by about 17,000 inhabitants.
