Unlike most protected areas in the world, Vatthe National Park is not state-owned like any other land. This area is the subject of a preservation agreement between a New Zealand NGO, the local population and the State. Covering an area of more than 2,276 hectares, the alluvial forest is dominated by a limestone peak at an altitude of nearly 400 m. More than 36 bird species, 5 of which are endemic to the archipelago, and a third of the archipelago's freshwater fish also swim here. Many agencies offer days organized in groups or alone for a safe walking excursion. Do not venture alone, the trails are not marked.
